The Encounter That Reveals Too Much
When Jesus steps onto the shore of the region of the Gerasenes, He is immediately confronted by a man possessed by many demons.
Before Jesus speaks a word, the demons cry out:
“What do You want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me!”
(Luke 8:28)
This reaction raises immediate questions:
- How did they know His identity?
- Why did they expect torment?
- Why were they afraid Jesus might act before the appointed time?
Their fear reveals more than their words.

The demons recognized Jesus instantly—long before humans understood who He was.
Why They Were Called “Legion”
Jesus asks the demonized man:
“What is your name?”
The reply is chilling:
“Legion,” because many demons had gone into him.
(Luke 8:30)
A Roman legion consisted of thousands of soldiers.
The name tells us:
- The possession was massive
- The control was total
- The man had no remaining resistance
But the name “Legion” also reflects military order and occupation—an invading force exercising control over a human life.
The Fear That Gave Them Away
The demons repeatedly beg Jesus:
“…not to order them to go into the Abyss.”
(Luke 8:31)
This detail is crucial.
They are not afraid of:
- People
- Chains
- Physical punishment
They are terrified of Jesus’ authority to imprison them.
What the Abyss Is (Biblically)
Scripture describes the Abyss as:
- A place of confinement for wicked spirits (Revelation 9:1–11)
- The prison Satan himself will be bound in (Revelation 20:1–3)
The demons knew:
- Their judgment was real
- Their time was limited
- Jesus had authority to send them there immediately
This explains their plea recorded elsewhere:
“Have You come to torment us before the time?”
(Matthew 8:29)
They recognized not just Jesus’ power—but His role as their future Judge.

The Abyss is not metaphorical—it is a place of confinement for fallen spirits.
Why the Demons Begged to Enter the Pigs
After Jesus refuses to send them into the Abyss, something unexpected happens:
“They begged Him to let them enter the pigs.”
(Luke 8:32)
This raises two obvious questions:
- Why pigs?
- Why did the pigs immediately drown?
The answers reveal how demons think—and what they fear most.
Why Demons Wanted Bodies at All
Throughout Scripture, demons are consistently shown as:
- Seeking embodiment
- Unable to function freely without a host
- Restless when disembodied
Jesus Himself explains this:
“When an unclean spirit goes out of a person… it passes through waterless places seeking rest.”
(Matthew 12:43)
This tells us:
- Disembodied spirits experience unrest
- Possession provides relief
- Loss of embodiment is a form of restraint
Faced with imprisonment in the Abyss, the demons begged for any living host rather than confinement.
Why Pigs—and Not Humans
Two factors stand out:
- The pigs were nearby
- Pigs were ritually unclean animals
The demons:
- Could not demand human hosts
- Were completely subject to Jesus’ authority
- Settled for the nearest available living creatures
Their request itself demonstrates their powerlessness.
Why the Pigs Immediately Drowned
Here is the key detail many miss:
👉 Jesus did not command the pigs to drown.
👉 The demons caused it.
The herd rushed into the sea and perished.
Why?
Because:
- Demons destroy whatever they inhabit
- Chaos follows wherever they gain control
- Even within the pigs, they could not remain
The sea, throughout Scripture, symbolizes:
- Chaos
- Judgment
- Destruction
The drowning pigs became a visible demonstration of the demons’ true nature.

Where demons gain control, destruction follows.
A Quiet Judgment on Display
Jesus did not need to say another word.
By allowing the demons to enter the pigs:
- Their destructive intent was exposed
- Their fear of judgment was justified
- Their ultimate fate was previewed
The scene shows clearly:
This is what demons always do.
This Was Their First Earthly Encounter—But Not Their First Encounter
Although this was their first encounter with Jesus on earth, they knew Him immediately.
They knew:
- His name
- His divine status
- His authority
- Their future judgment
The only explanation is this:
👉 They knew Him from before.
They recognized Jesus as:
- The Son of God
- Their Creator
- Their Judge
This powerfully testifies to Jesus’ pre-human existence.
They Did More Than Fear Him—They Submitted
Mark records:
“When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before Him.”
(Mark 5:6)
This posture reflects:
- Submission
- Prostration
- Recognition of authority
James later summarizes this reality:
“Even the demons believe—and shudder.”
(James 2:19)
What Humans Miss—but Demons See
People saw:
- A man from Nazareth
- A teacher
- A healer
The demons saw:
👉 The eternal Son of God within human flesh
His humanity concealed nothing from them.
The Final Proof: Jesus and God’s Authority Are One
After healing the man, Jesus instructs him:
“Return home and tell how much God has done for you.”
(Luke 8:39)
The man obeys by proclaiming:
“…how much Jesus had done for him.”
Luke offers no correction.
The implication is clear:
👉 What God did, Jesus did.
What Scripture Allows Us to Say Clearly
✔ Demons recognized Jesus instantly
✔ They feared His authority as Judge
✔ They knew of the Abyss and final judgment
✔ They sought embodiment to avoid restraint
✔ Their destruction of the pigs revealed their nature
✔ Jesus’ pre-existence and divinity are strongly implied
A Careful Biblical Conclusion
The Legion feared Jesus not merely because He was powerful—
But because:
- He was their Creator
- He was their Judge
- He held their eternal fate
The demons knew what many humans still deny:
👉 Jesus is Lord.
Final Thought
If demons tremble before Jesus—
And Jesus approaches humans with mercy—
Then the greatest tragedy is not fearing Him…
But ignoring Him.

The One demons fear is the same One who offers mercy to humanity.
