Nefarious is a 2023 American Christian independent horror film written and directed by Chuck Konzelman and Cary Solomon. It is based on Steve Deace’s 2016 novel, A Nefarious Plot. The film stars Jordan Belfi as Dr. James Martin, a psychiatrist tasked with evaluating Edward Wayne Brady (played by Sean Patrick Flanery), a convicted death row inmate and notorious serial killer. Edward claims to be possessed by a demon, going by the name “Nefariamus” or “Nefarious,” and challenges Dr. Martin to determine if he is genuinely demonically possessed or merely faking it to avoid execution.

The plot revolves around Dr. Martin’s evaluation of Edward, who has just replaced the previous psychiatrist, Dr. Alan Fischer, who committed suicide after interviewing Edward. The warden warns Dr. Martin that Edward is a skilled manipulator who can get into people’s heads. Edward’s execution is scheduled for 11 p.m., and Dr. Martin must determine his mental state before that time. If Dr. Martin deems Edward sane, he will be executed; otherwise, he will be deemed unfit for execution.

Edward insists he is a demon inhabiting his body, and he has malicious plans for Dr. Martin. He reveals personal details about Dr. Martin’s life and predicts that Martin will commit three murders before the day is over. As Dr. Martin attempts to reach Edward and understand his condition, he discovers Edward’s beliefs about demons’ role in the world. Martin concludes that Edward has an insane belief system, certifying him as unfit for execution.

However, as the film unfolds, Edward’s manipulative and eerie actions begin to take a toll on Dr. Martin’s psyche. Edward claims that Dr. Martin has taken advantage of his pregnant girlfriend, leading to a tense confrontation between them. As the story intensifies, secrets are unveiled, and the boundaries between reality and demonic influence blur.
